Cleveland Browns

Steelers vs Browns Free Pick

Week 1 of the NFL continues Sunday with a big AFC North showdown when the Pittsburgh Steelers visit the Cleveland Browns. The current line on top sportsbooks has Pittsburgh favored by 9 points with the over/under point total on 47.

Pittsburgh will have its top three skills players back for the season as quarterback Ben Roethlisberger returns, wide receiver Antonio Brown has extended his contract and running back Le’Veon Bell ended his training camp holdout. Bell is expected to play, but not as much as usual due to only being in training camp less than a week.

Cleveland will be without its top pick Myles Garrett. The Browns picked the defensive end first overall in the draft, but he suffered a high ankle sprain and will miss Sunday’s opener. The Browns know that strong defense is the only way to slow down the Steelers, but will begin the season without Garrett.

Pittsburgh was No. 16 in passing defense in the NFL last season giving up over 243 yards per game, but added Joe Haden a former Pro-Bowler with Cleveland to sure up its secondary.

Another big upgrade for Pittsburgh on defense was T.J. Watt their first round draft choice, who is the younger brother of J.J. Watt the Pro-Bowler with Houston. He played well during preseason and will see plenty of action at outside linebacker. The new defensive additions will help the Steelers in defense of their AFC North title.

DeShone Kizer is another rookie for Cleveland who was ready to start at the next level. The second round draft pick out of Notre Dame will be Cleveland’s starting quarterback on Sunday. Kizer will take the reins of an offense that was No. 30 last season and averaged just a paltry 16.5 points per game. In addition, the Browns lost Terrelle Pryor their top wide receiver from last season to free agency.

Pittsburgh offensive tackle Jerald Hawkins did not practice Thursday due to a knee injury.

Cleveland released safety Calvin Pryor Thursday after he had been involved with a fight during practice with Ricardo Louis a teammate.

The Steelers have won the past four straight against the Browns.

Pittsburgh is 4-1-1 against the spread in its past 6 games played on grass.

Cleveland is 1-5-1 ATS in its last 7 games played on grass.

With this free pick, we like Pittsburgh to cover.

Cleveland Browns 2017 Outlook

One team will also finish last and for the NFL’s AFC Central division that team has been the Cleveland Browns on a regular basis of late.

That trend is likely to continue as last season they finished 1-15 and have still not answered the lingering question of who their starting quarterback will be.

Brock Osweiler acquired during the offseason will start for the team’s first preseason game this week under center, but head coach Hue Jackson has said the he has not selected the starter for the opening game..

Six different players played quarterback for the Browns last season and this season besides Osweiler there will be Cody Kessler, who started eight games last season, and rookie DeShone Kizer battling for the signal caller job.

Cleveland did invest in its offensive line with the signing of free agents JC Tretter and Kevin Zietler and giving a long term extension to Joel Bitonio. The anchor on the line remains Joe Thomas their All-Pro at left tackle.

A better offensive line will allow the team to commit to its running game and could help to take pressure off the quarterback. Leading the running backs this season should be Isaiah Crowell. He ran well for the Browns last season and showed he is a capable NFL running back.

Kenny Britt was signed as a free agent wide receiver to take the place of departed Terrelle Pryor, while the team will look to Corey Coleman its first round pick from a year ago to step up.

Defensively, the Browns fired Ray Horton their defensive coordinator and brought in Gregg Williams. The Browns used their first two picks in the draft to shore up the defense. Myles Garrett could become an elite pass rusher but is only 21. Jabrill Peppers is a strong safety but has played linebacker and could play the nickel back position as well.

Both Peppers and Garrett will need to learn the NFL quickly, but both bring much needed athleticism to the Brown defense.

Jamie Collins returns at linebacker as the defense’s anchor, and the team hopes Christian Kirskey a fellow linebacker improves his play. On the defensive line, look for Emmanuel Ogbah and Danny Shelton to stop the run.

Joe Haden is expected to take a leadership role in the secondary, while Jamar Taylor looked strong late last season.

While the roster is improved from last season, the Browns will be playing for the future this season and likely remain in the AFC Central cellar.

Cleveland Browns odds

AFC Central – 33 to 1

AFC Championship – 100 to 1

Super Bowl LII – 300 to 1

Browns vs Ravens Free Pick

Thursday Night Football opens Week 9 of the NFL regular season when the Baltimore Ravens host the Cleveland Browns. The current line on top sportsbooks has Baltimore favored by 10 points with the over/under point total sitting on 45.5.

Cleveland enters this game with an overall record on the season of 0-9 straight up and 2-7 against the spread. On the road, the Ravens are 0-5 SU and 2-3 ATS. Baltimore entering this game has an overall record of 4-4 SU and 3-5 ATS. At home, the Ravens are 2-2 SU and ATS.

The Browns will try to avoid getting closer to a league record they do not want when they face the Ravens Thursday night. Cleveland will attempt to avoid the franchise’s worst start to a season, but also end any chance of joining Detroit as the only NFL team to go 0-16.

Cleveland lost last week to Dallas 35-10 and has lost once to Baltimore. The Ravens beat the Browns 25-20 back in Week 2, after leading in the first quarter 20-2. Baltimore was slumping entering its bye week, but snapped its skid of four straight games last week with a 21-14 win against Pittsburgh.   › Continue reading

Pittsburgh enters this game with an overall record for the season of 9-6 straight up and 8-6 against the spread. On the road, the Steelers are 3-4 SU and 4-3 ATS. Cleveland on the season has a record overall of 3-12 SU and 6-9 ATS. At home, the Browns are 2-5 SU and 3-4 ATS.

Cleveland has not fared well against teams in the playoff picture, as the Browns lost to both Kansas City and Seattle the past two weeks. Cleveland is 1-9 over its past 10 games and will have to start Austin Davis in place of Johnny Manziel at quarterback due to a concussion suffered by Manziel.     › Continue reading

Baltimore will also have a different quarterback under center for this game. Cincinnati is off to its best start in franchises history and defeated Manziel and the Browns the last time the two teams met in December of 2014 30-0. The game was Manziel’s first start as a professional and he threw two interceptions and was repeatedly taunted by the defense of Cincinnati.    › Continue reading

Pro Football Betting — Are the Browns Surrendering By Starting Johnny Manziel?

By Charles Jay

Cleveland's playoff hopes are now in the hands of Johnny Football.

Cleveland’s playoff hopes are now in the hands of Johnny Football.

The Cleveland Browns have been going through a difficult stretch, and their quarterback has had an even rockier experience. Now a move has been made that the Browns hope will turn things back in the right direction for a late playoff run. Or are they? Is this just their way of looking ahead to 2015? That is the basis of some controversy (and questions among BetAnySports patrons)  involving the insertion of former Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel into the lineup. In his starting debut he faces the AFC North-leading Cincinnati Bengals in pro football betting action that begins at 1 PM ET at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland.

This is a rematch; in the first encounter, Cleveland controlled the game on the ground, with 170 rushing yards, and never let the Bengals get out of the starting gate. Andy Dalton threw three interceptions and the Browns humbled the Bengals by a 24-3 score. That game seemed to be a wakeup call for Cincinnati, as a team that usually doesn’t do too well as the visitor went on a three-game road winning streak. The Bengals looked as if they were going to bring their winning streak to four, this time at home, at least for three quarters. But they allowed 25 points in the final period to the Pittsburgh Steelers and come into this revenge match off a 42-21 defeat. › Continue reading

The Bengals are unbeaten on their home field and look to hold onto their half-game lead in the AFC North when they meet the Browns on Thursday night.

A.J. Green returned last week for Cincinnati against Jacksonville and grabbed a touchdown reception in the process. Over the past three seasons, the Bengals are 13-0-1 on their home field.   › Continue reading

NFL Betting — Browns vs. Titans: Locker Back, But is That Great News?

Tennessee's Jake Locker will likely start against the Cleveland Browns, despite his injured wrist.

Tennessee’s Jake Locker will likely start against the Cleveland Browns, despite his injured wrist.

By Charles Jay

The Tennessee Titans, who scored such a nice victory in their season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs, seem to be regressing at the moment. And they have been having quarterback problems as well. The Cleveland Browns aren’t ready to put Johnny Manziel into the lineup on a full-time basis, but they feel as if they can get by with the current arrangements. These teams do battle on Sunday in NFL betting action that is slated to begin at 1 PM ET at LP Field in Nashville.

Jake Locker injured his wrist in a 33-7 loss to Cincinnati two weeks ago, and sat out last week’s 41-17 defeat at the hands of Indianapolis. The team was in the hands of backup Charlie Whitehurst, who had played under Ken Whisenhunt in San Diego, for the most part. Now Locker may be ready to return. Not that it is any piece of great news for the Titans, who have gotten just 56% completions and four interceptions, not to mention eight sacks, out of him. › Continue reading
