Kansas City Chiefs 2017 Outlook

The defending AFC West champion Kansas City Chiefs fired their general manager this summer despite reaching the postseason in three of the four years John Dorsey was the GM.

The Chiefs did confirm their confidence in head coach Andy Reid by giving him a contract extension in June.

The Chiefs draft picks this year may need some time to show any dividends. The team traded next year’s first round draft pick so they could move up to draft Patrick Mahomes the strong arm quarterback from Texas Tech. For many, Mahomes was the most physically gifted quarterback in the draft.

He will sit behind veteran starter Alex Smith, which will give him time to learn and adjust to the NFL intricacies and work on his mechanics.

Tanoh Kpassagnon their second round draft pick at defensive end was a highly regarded player with Villanova, but the jump in quality of competition he will face should mean he will need some time to adjust.

The offense returns under the tutelage of Smith under center, steady Spencer Ware at running back, big play threat Tyreek Hill, and talented tight end Travis Kelce.

Last season the offense was No. 20 in total offense and has not been able to stay in games against explosive offenses like the Pittsburgh Steelers, Oakland Raiders and New England Patriots.

The Chiefs have won 43 games the past four seasons with Reid on the sidelines but have not had deep runs into the postseason.

The Chiefs drafted talented running back Kareem Hunt out of Toledo who should help early and ease some of the workload of Ware in the backfield.

Kansas City had one of the poorest defenses against the run of any team that reached the postseason. The rush defense was No. 26 allowing over 121 yards per game.

Kansas City signed nose tackle Bennie Logan to take the place of Dontari Poe. Chris Jones a talented defensive end should come into his own this season, following a strong rookie season.

However, the Chiefs defense needs linebackers Derrick Johnson and Justin Houston at 100% to help shut down the run. The two have both missed a number of games over the past two seasons.

Kansas City won the deeply talented AFC West last season, but will find it hard to repeat with a division that is so tough top to bottom.

Kansas City odds

AFC West – 2 to 1

AFC Championship – 12 to 1

Super Bowl LII – 30 to 1
