Cardinals vs Mets Free Pick

Monday night Major League Baseball action heads to the Big Apple when the St. Louis Cardinals visit the New York Mets. The current line on top sportsbooks has New York slightly favored at -115, St. Louis at +105 and the over/under run total on 9.

Entering the game, St. Louis on the season is 44-47 overall and 18-23 on the road. The Cardinals are 5-5 in their last 10 games played. New York on the season is 41-48 overall and 21-25 at home. The Mets are 4-6 in their last 10 games played.

If the Cardinals want to re-enter the race for the National League Central, they must play better when on the road. St. Louis will start a four-game series Monday at New York against the Mets. The Cardinals are coming off a three-game series at Pittsburgh in which they lost 2 of 3.

The Mets started their second half of the season following the All-Star break defeating Colorado in two straight games but lost on Sunday 13-4 in the finale of their three-game series. The Mets lost two of three to the Cardinals in the last series prior to the break for the All-Star Game.

St. Louis will send Adam Wainwright to the mound on Monday. The Cardinals right-hander is 10-5 with an ERA of 5.20. New York will counter with Zack Wheeler. The Mets right-hander is 3-6 with an ERA of 4.86 on the season.

Wainwright was victorious in three starts leading up to the All-Star break with seven or more strikeouts in each start. The veteran right-hander beat the Mets on July 8 giving up one run while striking out seven. Wainwright in 12 appearances in his career versus the Mets is 4-5 with an ERA of 4.66.

Wheeler has not won in his past seven starts. Wheeler’s last win came on May 27. Over three of his past four starts, the Mets right-hander has not pitched beyond the fourth inning. His last outing however was strong against St. Louis on July 8 giving up a pair of runs in six innings.

Mets left fielder Yoenis Cespedes did not play on Sunday, but should be in the lineup on Monday.

Cardinals’ first baseman Matt Carpenter is riding a six-game hitting streak.

St. Louis is 6-14 in its last 20 games on the road.

New York is 5-2 in its last 7 games at home.

With this free pick we like St. Louis to win.
