Cardinals vs Pirates Free Pick

National League Central action highlights the Saturday Major League Baseball calendar when the St. Louis Cardinals visit the Pittsburgh Pirates. The current line on top sportsbooks has Pittsburgh favored at -125, St. Louis on +120 and the over/under run total on 8.5.

Entering this game, St. Louis on the season is 43-46 overall and 17-22 on the road. The Cardinals are 5-5 in their last 10 games played. Pittsburgh on the season is 43-47 overall and 22-22 at home. The Pirates are 6-4 in their last 10 games played.

Pittsburgh and St. Louis are not sure if they will be buying or selling during the upcoming trade deadline frenzy but the results of this weekend’s three-game series between the two NL Central rivals could determine that for each.

The three-run homer by Josh Bell during the ninth inning led Pittsburgh to a 5-2 victory on Friday in the series opener. It was the third time Pittsburgh won with a walk off home run which leads the NL. The Pirates have won 17 of their past 29 games and trail first place Milwaukee by just 7 games.

The Cardinals are similar as they trail by just 6 ½ games but has started on a grueling road trip of 10 games. Friday’s loss was the seventh time this season the Cardinals lost when the score was tied entering the ninth inning.

St. Louis will send Lance Lynn to the mound on Saturday. The Cardinals right-hander is 7-6 with an ERA of 3.61. Pittsburgh will counter with Jameson Taillon. The Pirates right-hander is 5-2 with an ERA of 2.73.

Lynn gave up seven runs over two straight starts during June, including one versus Pittsburgh June 24, but in his past three outings has done much better. In his last start prior to the break for the All-Star Game, Lynn pitched seven shutout innings giving up three hits to the Mets.

Taillon did not pitch his last start in the rotation due to food poisoning and this will be his first start in 12 days. He has given up no runs in his last two starts with both results in wins. Taillon has given up two runs or less in four his past five outings.

St. Louis is 5-13 in its last 18 games on the road.

Pittsburgh is 6-1 in its last 7 games played.

With this free pick, we like Pittsburgh to win.
