American League vs National League All-Star Game Free Pick

July 11, 2017

The 88th annual Major League Baseball All-Star Game will be played Tuesday at Marlins Park in Miami, Florida between the American League All-Stars and the host National League All-Stars.

The current line on top sportsbooks has the National League slightly favored at -115, with the American League at +105 and the over/under run total on 9.

The AL will send Boston Red Sox southpaw ace Chris Sale to the mound, which is the second straight All-Star Game start for Sale, and is the first time that has been accomplished by a pitcher since 2000-2001 when Randy Johnson started consecutive All-Star Games for the NL.

Sale started last year’s All-Star Game representing the Chicago White Sox and will oppose Washington Nationals right-hander and ace Max Scherzer.

The AL has won four straight All-Star Games and 16 of the last 20. Rookie Aaron Judge from the New York Yankees will lead the AL offense. Judge has hit 30 home runs thus far during the season. A trio of stars from the Houston Astros – Jose Altuve, George Springer, Carlos Correa – will start for the AL.

The NL is no slouch. It too has a rookie sensation in Cody Bellinger. The rookie outfielder/first baseman for the Los Angeles Dodgers has hit 25 home runs thus far. Four Nationals’ players – Scherzer, Ryan Zimmerman, Daniel Murphy, Bryce Harper – will start for the NL side.

Scherzer starting for the NL was an easy decision for manager Joe Maddon from the Chicago Cubs, since Clayton Kershaw, with 14 wins to lead the majors for the Los Angeles Dodgers, pitched on Sunday and is not available to play.

Thus far this season Red Sox southpaw Sale is 11-4 with an ERA of 2.75, while Nationals right-hander Scherzer is 10-5 with an ERA of 2.10.

Sale is leading baseball with 178 strikeouts, which are five more than his opponent Scherzer has.

Scherzer is leading baseball in ERA and has just a 0.78 WHIP allowing opponents just a .163 batting average against him. This is the second time Scherzer has started an All-Star. While with the AL Detroit Tigers, he started in 2013 and becomes just the fifth pitcher in history to start an All-Star Games for both the AL and NL.

Last season the Cubs sent 7 players to the NL All-Star Game, this year they have just one – Wade Davis a pitcher.

With this free pick we like the American League to win.
