East vs West Free Pick

February 17, 2013

The 62nd All Start Game will be played tonight with the league’s stars out on display. This is the third time the game has been played in Houston. The last time it was held in Houston, LeBron James, at just 21 years of age won the game’s MVP award after scoring 29 points and leading the East team to victory 122-120.

That was seven season ago and much has changed since then. The roster for the West team is far superior to that of the East, especially at point guard. The West has the likes of Tony Parker, Russell Westbrook and Chris Paul, while the East has Kyrie Irving and Jrue Holiday. Rajon Rondo was the starting point guard for the East, but went down two weeks ago with a torn ACL.

Defense is nearly non-existent in the this game and the West has the offensive power to put points on the board with six players who are averaging over 20 points per game this season, while there are just four in that same category on the East roster.

In the frontcourt, the West also holds the advantage with the likes of Tim Duncan, Blake Griffin, Dwight Howard and LaMarcus Aldridge. The East gets much less scoring out of their frontcourt of Tyson Chandler, Joakim Noah and Kevin Garnett.

Last season the two teams combined to score 301 points, which was the third consecutive season that 280 or more points were scored in the game. Kobe Bryant will play in his 15th consecutive All Star Game, an NBA record. He has won the MVP award four times and set the record in last season’s game for career points in All Star games, breaking the record that was previously held by Michael Jordan.

However, last season Kevin Durant scored 36 points to win the MVP award. LeBron James scored 36 point as well in that game and the East whittled a 21-point lead to only one point near the end of the game but could not tie or take the lead. The Miami Heat will have three players starting in the game, as Chris Bosh will start in place of Rondo alongside teammates Dwayne Wade and James. Bet East +3
