49ers vs Falcons Free Pick

January 17, 2013

Just two remain, yes, only two NFC teams remain in the hunt for the Super Bowl and those two meet Sunday in Georgia. The San Francisco 49ers, winners of the NFC West division will visit the NFC South champion Atlanta Falcons to see who takes on the AFC Champion on February 3 in Super Bowl 47.

The 49ers enter this game with an overall record of 12-4-1 straight up and 10-7 against the spread. Atlanta owns the best record in the NFC at 14-3 straight up and 9-7-1 against the spread.

This is San Francisco’s second consecutive NFC Championship game, but this season they will be on the road, where as last season they hosted the New York Giants and lost.

Last Saturday, the 49ers were able to defeat the Green Bay Packers in their NFC divisional game 45-31. Colin Kaepernick, the 49ers starting quarterback made a mistake early giving up a pick six, but from that point on was near perfect in the game. The versatile QB accumulated 444 yards on the day and four touchdowns, while the 49ers were able to score on six of their final eight possessions to move on to the NFC Championship.

Atlanta comes into this game after winning a nail biter 30-28 over the Seattle Seahawks. Atlanta allowed the Seahawks to return from a 27-7 deficit to take the lead 28-27 with just 31 seconds remaining on the game clock. However, Matt Ryan the Falcons quarterback moved his offense 41 yards into field goal range in just two plays and Matt Bryant booted a 49-yard field goal to win the game.

The teams are evenly matched on offense but the 49ers might have a slight edge because of the double threat that Kaepernick offers as a running quarterback. Defensively the Falcons will be pressured to contain Kaepernick with ends Jonathan Babineaux, Kory Biermann and John Abraham, who has been nagged with injuries.

Justin Smith the defensive end for the 49ers is limited due to his injured triceps. The Falcons will look to run, run and run some more to start the game and then look to play action passes to open the field.

The 49ers are a 4-point favorite in this matchup with the total sitting at 49. Smart money takes the Falcons plus the points and the over to cash out.
