BCS Championship Preview – College Football

January 07, 2013

January 7, 2013
Sun Life Stadium Miami Florida

Notre Dame - AlabamaThe 12-0 Notre Dame Fighting Irish face the 12-1 Alabama Crimson Tide in what looks to be one of the most watched and anticipated sporting events in recent years. Both schools have a huge fan base and a great deal of tradition.

Alabama was just 6-7 this year ATS (against the spread).  They were so heavily favored in their games that they could win by 49 points and still not cover, like they did against Western Carolina whom they defeated 49-0. Notre Dame was 7-5 ATS mainly because they were on nobody’s radar at the start of the year and had to work their way up the rankings the entire year.  Alabama had the number one spot in the country before falling to Texas A&M on November 10th.  But because of other teams losing at the perfect time they scooted their way right back up to the number two spot and a shot at the national championship.

Defensively the schools are very similar. They both give up just ten points per contest.  They both give up under 100 yards rushing and 200 yards passing per game.  Offensively, the stats all look similar except for the one that counts most, points scored. Notre Dame averaged just 26 points per game to Alabama’s 38 points per game. Both teams rush and pass for about 200 yards in each category per game average.

The betting line is Alabama -10 and the total is 40.5. Some folks who are not that familiar with college football may wonder why the number one ranked team is ten point underdogs. That would generate a whole separate conversation too deep for this brief article.  But the simple fact is Alabama is a better team talent wise and coaching wise. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they will win tonight. But that is why they are favored by ten points.

What to bet? I have to be honest with you guys. I am not going to bet anything on this game. I want to enjoy this game from a fan standpoint and not worry about points scored for a total or back door covers.  I just want to watch the game a see a hard fought battle on the grid iron and that is all. So for that reason I am not issuing a pick. Please take the stats above and apply them to your own opinions if you are looking to wager on the game.
