49ers vs Patriots Free Pick

December 16, 2012

Just three weeks of football left in the regular season of the NFL and two teams that could possibly meet in the Super Bowl play tonight when the New England Patriots host the San Francisco 49ers.

This season the 49ers are in first place in the NFC West and have a current record of 9-3-1 straight up and 8-5 losses against the spread. The Patriots have locked up the AFC East crown for the ninth time in the past ten seasons and have a record of 10-3 straight up and 8-4-1 against the spread.

When one thinks of today’s matchup they look right away at the stat sheet and see it is a matchup of one of the best (second overall) defenses in the league versus the no. 1 offense in the league. The 49ers defense is allowing opponents only 275 yards a game, while the high-powered offense of New England is averaging 425 yards per game.

Last weekend the Patriots defeated the number one team in the AFC, the Houston Texans 42-14, while San Francisco took care of the Miami Dolphins 27-13 at home.

Tom Brady, the veteran quarterback for New England is tied for first place in quarterback rating with 104.2. He has completed over 64% of his passes for 3,833 yards with 29 for touchdowns and only four for interceptions. His favorite target is Wes Welker. The wide receiver has 95 receptions, 1,116 total yards and four for touchdowns.

Offensively, the 49ers are only no. 26 in the league overall in passing with Colin Kaepernick starting as quarterback. He has only started the past four games, but has a strong arm and likes to run the ball as well. The 49ers will be helped by the fact they will be facing one of the poorer defenses in the NFL, as New England is only ranked no. 26 on the league in overall defense.

The current line has New England favored at home by 4 ½ points with the total resting comfortably at 46 ½. Smart money takes the 49ers plus the points and the total to cash out on the over.
