Texans vs Patriots Free Pick

Tonight Massachusetts is invaded by Texas, as the New England Patriots host the Houston Texans in what many believe might just be a preview to the AFC Championship in late January.

New England has a record thus far of 9-3 straight up and 7-5 against the spread. Houston has the best record thus far in the AFC at 11-1 straight up and 8-4 against the spread.

Both teams have already clinched playoff berths. If Houston wins, they will go a long way in securing home field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs, while a Patriots win will get them within one game of Houston for the best record in the AFC with three games left.

Last weekend the Texans defeated Tennessee to clinch their playoff berth. A win tonight will be their seventh straight. Since the race for the playoffs is tight in the AFC, the Texans still cannot clinch the AFC South with a win, as Indianapolis is only two games behind.

New England already owns the AFC East title. New England has won the title four consecutive years and nine out of the past 10. They clinched that title with their 23-16 victory against the Miami Dolphins.

The two teams tonight are the top two in the NFL in scoring offenses. Tonight’s game should have a great deal of scoring as the Patriots have perennial all pro Tom Brady at quarterback with is arsenal of receivers led by Wes Walker. Houston will counter with Matt Schaub at quarterback and a balanced attack on offense that running back Arian Foster and wide receiver Andre Johnson are the go to guys.

The Texans have one of the best pass rushers in football in J.J. Watt and he will be playing against either Logan Mankins who has a sore ankle or his replacement Donald Thomas. That matchup might be key to the game’s outcome. Therefore, a key defense play or turnover caused by the defense will most likely turn this game.

The Patriots are favored by 4 points with the total at 51 on the latest line. It is hard to go against Brady at home, but the Texans have a tougher defense overall. I like Houston against the spread and New England straight up, with the total cashing out to those taking the over.
