Georgia Southern vs Old Dominion Free Pick

Today in Virginia, the Old Dominion Monarchs host the Georgia Southern Eagles in a quarterfinal FCS playoff. This is the second straight year ODU has appeared in the playoffs, while Georgia Southern is a veteran of postseason play and have appeared 19 times and are owners of six national championships.

The two schools met last December and scored 103 points between them as Georgia Southern came out on top 55-48. The matchup today should have similar results to those of last year as the two teams are loaded on offense and not that strong defensively.

Old Dominion’s offense thinks pass first and rush a distant second. ODU led the nation in points scored averaging 46 per game, in passing yardage with more than 390 per game and in total offense averaging nearly 550 yards a game. Taylor Heinicke is the signal caller for ODU at quarterback and has rushed or passed for a combined 51 touchdowns. He has also thrown at least 20 receptions to eight different receivers on the team.

Georgia Southern is known for its triple threat option that averages 393 rushing yards per game, which leads the nation. Quarterback Jerick McKinnon leads the team in rushing with 1,479 yards on the ground and 15 touchdowns. He has been helped by Dominique Swope, who plays running back and has rushed for close to 1,000 yards and scored 14 touchdowns. Six other rushers on Georgia Southern have rushed for over 400 yards each.

When ODU runs the ball, it is to complement its dangerous passing attack. Georgia Southern uses the pass instead of the run only when large gains are needed, as they average only seven passes per game.

Both defenses are much weaker than their offenses and will make for a wide open game. The current line has been posted as a tossup with the total at 71 ½. I like Georgia Southern to win with the total making winners of those taking the OVER.
