Broncos vs Raiders Free Pick

December 06, 2012

The bright lights of NFL Thursday Night Football head to northern California for one of football’s greatest rivalries. Tonight the Denver Broncos visit AFC West rivals the Oakland Raiders in a matchup between the division’s best team and one of its worst.

Denver has a record of 9-3 straight up and 6-6 against the spread. The Broncos clinched the AFC West title last week with their victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Oakland, on the other hand, has had a very disappointing season with 3-9 straight up and against the spread.

Even though the Broncos and Raiders are light years away from one another in the standings, the rivalry between the two teams will make this game very competitive. Oakland has lost five consecutive games, with three of the five losses on their home turf including losing 20-17 last week to the Cleveland Browns. The score of that game is not evident in how terrible the Raiders played. They scored a late touchdown with just one second left to play in the game.

Denver is now looking to win as many of its last four games as possible to try to solidify a home game in the playoffs. Last week’s 31-23 victory over the Buccaneers was highlighted by 24 points after the halftime break. The win was the Broncos seventh in a row.

On offense, there is not much difference between the two teams. Both the Raiders’ QB Carson Palmer and the Broncos’ Peyton Manning have more than 3,500 yards through the air. However, on the ground, Denver has been more effective, averaging 20 yards more per game than Oakland. The Broncos are third in the league in scoring with a game average of 29.1 points, which is more than 10 points higher per game than Oakland.

The Raiders defense is very suspect giving up 31 points per game. In the first matchup between the two teams earlier in the season, the Broncos won by the score of 37-6. Denver had more than 500 yards on offense in that game and scored 27 points after halftime.

The line has Denver as a 10-point favorite playing on the road, with the total sitting at 48 ½. I like the Raiders plus the points in this with the total cashing out on the over.
