Notre Dame vs USC Free Pick

November 24, 2012

One of NCAA football’s biggest rivalries will play out tonight when the Notre Dame Fighting Irish takes on the USC Trojans at the LA Memorial Coliseum, in Los Angeles, California. For Notre Dame the game means everything, while for the Trojans an upset win would help them forget about a disappointing season.

Notre Dame comes into the game ranked no. 1 in the nation with a record of 11-0 straight up and 6-5 against the spread. Southern California enters the game with a record of 7-4 straight up and 3-8 against the spread. With a win tonight, the Fighting Irish will play in the BCS Championship game to decide the national champion on January 7.

Last weekend, the Irish beat Wake Forest 38-0 at home and will rely in this game on their tough defense that gives up just 10 points a game, which is second in the nation. USC was the no. 1 ranked team to start the season but has lost four games this season, including losing to UCLA last weekend, their cross town rival 38-28.

Starting quarterback Matt Barkley, who was a preseason favorite for the Heisman Trophy, was hurt in the game and will not play against Notre Dame. The Trojans will have a redshirt freshman starting at quarterback.

USC has played spoiler before against the Irish and has beaten an undefeated Notre Dame team on six occasions in their 83 games head to head. However, the last time USC did that was in 1980. This game has futures available and in the preseason, you could have taken USC as a favorite by 6 points, incredible how things change in a few months, as the Irish are the ones favored now by a touchdown.

Over the last decade, USC has won 9 of the past 10 games head to head against Notre Dame. The only win for the Irish was in 2010 in LA 20-16. In that game, Barkley was also injured for USC and did not play. The under has cashed out in 4 of the past 5 games the two teams have played head to head. The under has also cashed out in six of the past seven home games for USC.

The current line has Notre Dame favored by 6, with the total sitting at 46. Take USC plus the points. On the total, take the under to cash out.
