Washington vs California Free Pick

November 02, 2012

Friday night football under the lights moves to California for a Pac-12 matchup between the Washington Huskies and their host the California Golden Bears. The Huskies thus far in the season are 4-4 straight up and 3-4-1 against the spread. Their opponent the Golden Bears have struggled this season and are 3-6 straight up and against the spread.

Both teams are not in the running for the championship of the Pac-12, but both would like to play in a postseason bowl game. The Huskies are a well balanced team that mixes the run with the pass, while the Golden Bears have a great deal of speed and a wide open offensive attack.

Washington has had a tough schedule this season, as 5 of their 8 opponents thus far have been teams ranked in the top 15 in the country. They have faced the likes of Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, USC and LSU. Few teams in the nation have had a strength of schedule comparable to the Huskies. In those games, the Huskies were able to upset both Oregon State and Stanford.

Cal also has had a tough schedule this season as they have played Stanford, USC, UCLA and Ohio State. They were able to defeat UCLA by an impressive 43-17 margin and looked very good in a 35-28 loss to Ohio State. In that particular game, the football gods gave some luck to Ohio State.

On a statistical basis, Cal is ahead of the Huskies in both defense and scoring. The Golden Bears schedule has been almost as tough as the Huskies as well. However, Cal’s season just has not been as good as Washington’s’. They have not played as well as the Huskies have overall and have lost games they could have won.

Washington has 6 wins and 1 loss against the spread in their past 7 games against teams that have a losing record. California on the other hand has 1 wins and 5 losses against the spread in their past six home games.

The current line has California as the favorite at home by 4 points with the total at 51 ½. I like the Huskies on the road to play well, keep the game within reach and possibly pull off the upset. Take Washington plus the 4. The total will make winners of those smart money bettors who choose the OVER.
