Chiefs vs Chargers Free Pick

November 01, 2012

The NFL returns to sunny, southern California for a matchup between two AFC West rivals. The San Diego Chargers tied for second place in the division host the last place Kansas City Chiefs. San Diego currently has a record of 3-4 straight up and against the spread, while Kansas City is suffering with a record of 1-6 straight up and 2-5 against the spread.

Both teams are mired in losing streaks, as the Chiefs have lost their last four games including last week against division rival Oakland 26-16 at home in Arrowhead Stadium. They own the worst record in the NFL at this point in the season. Already this season, the Chiefs have lost once to the Chargers.

In the fourth week of the season, the Chargers embarrassed the Chiefs at home 37-20. The Chiefs have problems at quarterback as Matt Cassel the original starter was benched in favor of Brady Quinn, who is now injured, which means Cassel will be starting in his place tonight. The only positive thing on the offense this season has been the running game. The team is third in the league in rushing averaging 155 yards per game.

However, the Chargers can offset that, as they are second in the league against the run allowing only 80 yards per game on the ground. The Chargers however have a number of issues working against them. Quarterback Philip Rivers had four interceptions in their loss to Denver two games ago and struggled in Cleveland last week in their one point loss. The Chargers will try to establish the running game against the Chiefs with Ryan Mathews.

If the Chargers win tonight it will be the first sweep of their annual series against the Chiefs in three seasons. On Thursday nights, Kansas City has 5 wins and 2 losses against the spread over their past seven games. However, the Chiefs have 3 wins and 8 losses against the spread in their past 11 games versus AFC teams and 1 win and 4 losses against the spread against teams from the AFC West.

The current line has the Chargers as the favorite by 8 points with the total sitting are 42 ½ points. Smart money goes with the Chargers less the points, with the total making winners the UNDER crowd.
