Celtics vs Heat Free Pick

Hoops are back. That is right, the NBA opens its 2012-2013 season tonight with a great matchup between the defending NBA champions the Miami Heat and the Boston Celtics, the winners of the most championships in NBA history.

This matchup is quickly becoming one of the best rivalries in the league. Boston will be looking to avenge their loss to the Heat last year in the playoffs.

Each team has a few new players thanks to free agency. Boston signed Courtney Lee a great young shooter, to replace Ray Allen the veteran guard who left to play with the Heat. The Heat kept their starting five intact from last season and added Allen and Rashard Lewis. Boston will have Jason Terry coming off their bench as a sixth man and Jeff Green returns after having heart surgery.

One intriguing factor in the game will be Ray Allen facing his ex-teammates to open the NBA season. Last season, Allen lost the Eastern Conference finals to LeBron James and the Heat, but this season he will be wearing a Heat uniform and trying to help the Heat win back-to-back titles.

A key matchup in the game will be veteran Celtic guard Paul Pierce facing James. The two will be guarding one another on each end of the floor. For the past three playoff seasons, the two players have lined up against one another, with each player having different individual skills. Pierce is 35 years old and starting his 15th season as a pro, while James is 27.

One the Miami side, look for the other two parts of the Miami Trio – Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade – to help James as they did all of last season. Rajon Rondo, the talented point guard who played excellent last season down the stretch for the Celtics, will run the Celtics offense. Kevin Garnett, the Celtics best big man will return for another season and will make things tough for Bosh down low.

The current line has Miami favored at home by 6 ½ points with the over under total points sitting at 186. The first few games of the season are a hard call to make, but a safe bet is Miami less the points, with the total cashing out to those who take the under line.
