Giants vs Cardinals Free Pick

October 17, 2012

The National League Championship moves to St. Louis for the third game of the series featuring the San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals. The teams split the first two games played in San Francisco so the series is tied at one game apiece.

Tonight the Giants will send Matt Cain to the mound to face the Cardinals. Cain started the all-star game as a selection by Tony La Russa the ex-manager of the St. Louis Cardinals. Cain won 16 games during the regular season, but struggled when he faced St. Louis. This season Cain had 1 win and 1 loss versus the Cardinals but his earned run average was very high at 6.94. In eight starts in his career against the Cardinals, Cain has a record of 2 wins and 3 losses and an earned run average of 4.94.

Starting for the Cardinals will be Kyle Lohse, who also was a 16 game winner during the regular season. Lohse will look to end an unlucky string by Cardinals’ starting pitchers in Game 3. St. Louis has played three straight games with their starting pitcher not pitching beyond the fifth inning.

Lohse is the type of pitchers that looks to let the hitters get themselves out by swinging at bad pitches. He needed only 87 pitches in his last outing, over seven innings, but did not get a decision in Game 4 against the Washington Nationals in the NL division series. During the season, Lohse pitched at least six innings throwing less than 100 pitches on 11 occasions.

The Matt Holiday and Marco Scutaro incident that took place at second base when Holliday slid hard into Scutaro and injured the veteran seems to be forgotten but no one will know for sure until Holliday faces Cain for the first time at the plate. Scutaro will play in tonight’s game, but is nursing a very sore strained left hip.

The current line has the Cardinals favored on their home field with the run total sitting at 7. Smart money takes the Giants to win with the total cashing out to those taking the OVER.
