Yankees vs Tigers Free Pick

The New York Yankees must feel like they are living a nightmare. New York has lost the first two against the Tigers in of AL Championship series against Detroit. Now they have to play in Detroit in game 3 and face the Tigers’ pitching ace Justin Verlander.

The Tigers’ pitching staff has been exceptional since Game 3 of their series against the Oakland A’s. Since that time, no pitcher on Detroit, except for Jose Valverde their closer, has given up an earned run.

Verlander, the AL reigning MVP won his two starts in the last series against Oakland, which included a shutout in the fifth and last game of the series. The starters for the Detroit rotation have 0.94 ERA in the playoffs thus far.

The pitching greatness thus far in Detroit has gone along with the horrendous slump the Yankees are in. New York lost field general Derek Jeter to a broken ankle. He was leading the team in hitting and now the other starts on the team must start to hit. Alex Rodriguez, Nick Swisher, Robinson Cano and Curtis Granderson are just a combined 12 of 107 at the plate, which equates to a .112 average during the playoffs.

On top of that, add in Russell Martin the team’s catcher and you have five starters hitting below 200 with 42 strikeouts between them. That group has 25 more Ks than hits and only seven RBIs between them, four of which came off the bat of just one player, Cano.

Against Verlander, the Yankees have had some success. This season he pitched three times against New York and the Yankees were victorious in two of those three games. New York will send Phil Hughes to the mound to face Detroit. On June 3, the right hander had an excellent complete game against Detroit and Verlander in a Yankee victory.

Verlander’s last start against the Yankees was on August 6 and he pitched eight innings and had 14 strikeouts.

The current line has the Tigers favored at -180 with the Yankees at +170. The run total is now 7. Take Detroit to win with Verlander on the mound and the total to pay out to those taking the UNDER.
