Tigers vs A’s Free Pick

October 09, 2012

Baseball’s second season has begun and one intriguing matchup has the American West Champion Oakland A’s against the American League Central Champion Detroit Tigers. The Tigers lead the series 2-0 and can eliminate the A’s with a victory tonight in Oakland. If the Tigers are successful in defeating the A’s tonight, it will be Detroit’s second consecutive trip to the AL Championship series.

Oakland has their back against the wall in this series, but that is nothing new for the upstart A’s. Oakland needed a sweep last week of the Texas Rangers to win the AL West title and succeeded. The A’s will have Brett Anderson starting on the mound against Detroit tonight. Anderson is 4-2 on the season in his six starts. The southpaw returned during midseason after missing 14 months recuperating from ligament surgery on his elbow. Anderson will be monitored closely by his coaches and will most likely have a pitch count of 80 before he is pulled.

Countering Anderson, the Tigers will send Anibal Sanchez to the mound. Sanchez has a record with Detroit of 4-6. He was acquired by Detroit from Miami at midseason prior to the trade deadline. Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera, the recent winner of the Triple Crown has 3 hits in just 8 official at bats against the A’s in the series, but has not yet to hit a home run or knock in a run.

The two teams last met during the postseason in 2006 in the AL Championship series in which the Tigers swept the A’s to play in the World Series. Detroit lost that World Series 4-1 to the St. Louis Cardinals. Oakland batters must get better at the plate if they hope to win tonight. In the first two games of the series, the Detroit pitchers have struck out 23 Oakland batters, including 14 in game one.

The line at this time has Oakland as the favorite at -130, with the Tigers at +120. The run total has moved to 7 from an opening of 8. Smart money takes the A’s to win and extend the series to a fourth game, with the total cashing out to those bettors taking the OVER.
