Eagles at Cardinals

September 23, 2012

It’s a pair of 2-0 teams that will meet up Sunday in the desert, but are these teams good or lucky? Philadelphia has won each of its first two games by one point each and has done so despite nine total turnovers. The Cardinals pulled the stunner of the early season with a win in New England a week ago but has won its two games by a total of six points.

Philadelphia beat the Ravens 24-23 on Sunday as Michael Vick scored on a 1-yard run with just 1:55 remaining. Trailing 23-17, Vick led the Eagles down the field with a 10-play, 80-yard march to take the lead, capped by the touchdown scamper. Vick finished the game 23-for-32 through the air for 371 yards and a touchdown, but threw two interceptions. Vick also rushed for 34 yards and a score. LeSean McCoy ran for 81 yards and a touchdown, but lost a fumble, one of the Eagles’ four turnovers.

The Cardinals won 20-18 at New England, handing Tom Brady the first loss in a home opener in his career. QB Kevin Kolb, who engineered a game-winning drive in the season opener after starter John Skelton suffered an ankle injury, completed 15-of-27 passes for 140 yards with a touchdown. He added another score on the ground for the Cardinals, who are 2-0 for the first time in four years.

In the past 50 years, only four teams have turned the ball over at least four times in each of their first two games and won both games. The Eagles can’t afford to continue that trend if they hope to win many more. The play-action pass seems to be the Eagles’ top weapon; thus far, Vick has completed all 15 of his passes off the play-action fake. It’s the threat of Vick or one of his backs running with the ball that freezes the secondary long enough for Philadelphia’s receivers to break free.

Last year, Arizona won 21-17 at Philadelphia when Skelton connected with WR Early Doucet for 5-yard TD pass with 1:53 remaining. Skelton remains out and Kolb will start again. He was the Eagles’ starter entering the 2010 season but was injured in Week 1 and lost his job to Vick. Kolb, who didn’t play in last year’s game, was traded to Arizona before the 2011 season.

SBA Take: Every season needs it’s juggernaut and this one is no different. Sometimes they come out beating teams down by three touchdown averages and sometimes they just beat them by field goals and go on to great post season success. Are the Eagles this seasons juggernaut that could be 8-1 at the end of week 10? We think s0. With that said we see the Eagles winning and covering at Arizona today.
