Michigan vs Notre Dame Free Pick

September 22, 2012

The NCAA football season enters its fourth weekend today with a myriad of games on the second. The biggest matchup of rivals this weekend has the Michigan Wolverines traveling to South Bend, Indiana to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The Wolverines suffered a loss in their opening game of the season versus the Crimson Tide of Alabama, but have since won two straight to lift their record to 2-1 SU and 1-2 ATS. Michigan is currently ranked no. 18 in the polls.

Notre Dame has had a very good start to their season and is 3-0 SU and 2-1 ATS. The Fighting Irish traveled to East Lansing last weekend and quieted the raucous Michigan State fans by defeating the Spartans 20-3. Notre Dame’s defense was the story of the game as the unit gave up just 237 total yards against a fine Michigan State team. Manti Te’o the Notre Dame linebacker orchestrated the team’s defensive effort.

Last weekend Michigan took apart Massachusetts 63-13. The game was never in doubt and Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson led the way with 300 yards and two touchdowns. He is the key offensively for the Wolverines. If Notre Dame expects to win, they need to contain Robinson and make him pass the ball to beat them. Robinson has been prone to throw interceptions and threw one last weekend.

Offensively the Irish need to become more consistent overall and more effective on third down. Against Michigan State, the Irish offense was stopped 13 out of 14 times on third down. That puts a great deal of pressure on their defense, as they will be on the field much more time and will wear down by the end of the game.

In last year’s matchup, the Wolverines scored 28 fourth quarter points to defeat Notre Dame 35-31. The Irish are currently favored by 6 in the game, with the total for over/under resting at 49. Smart money takes Michigan with the points. The total will cash out to those who bet on the OVER.
