Michigan at Notre Dame Football Free Pick

September 21, 2012

It’s a big game Saturday night in South Bend as Michigan and Notre Dame meet under the lights at Notre Dame Stadium for the first time in 22 years. The unbeaten Irish are 5.5-point favorites on

The Wolverines bounced back from an iffy effort against Air Force with a 63-13 blowout of new FBS member UMass on Saturday. QB Denard Robinson continued to build his Heisman case. He put up 397 yards of total offense and accounted for four touchdowns in limited duty. Robinson, who came out of the game with Michigan (2-1) leading 56-13 late in the third quarter, rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown and completed 16-of-24 passes for 291 yards and three scores. Robinson is 91 yards from setting the all-time total offensive record at Michigan.

UM tailback Fitzgerald Toussaint, who missed Michigan’s opener due to suspension and then carried for just 7 yards against Air Force, had 85 yards and a touchdown against the Minutemen.

The Irish proved they were for real last week with a 20-3 dominating road win over then-No. 10 Michigan State. he Fighting Irish (3-0) snapped a six-game losing streak against ranked teams and beat a top-10 opponent for the first time in seven years. The last time a top-10 team scored fewer than Michigan State did at home against the Irish was in 1966 when they shut out USC 51-0. Notre Dame had its best showing on defense anywhere against a top-10 opponent since beating Texas A&M 28-3 in 1993. The Spartans had won 15 straight at home.

QB Everett Golson was just OK, going 14 of 32 for 178 yards with a touchdown, but he didn’t have a turnover – no Irish player did. A victory over Michigan would improve Notre Dame to 4-0 for the first time since 2002. It would give the Irish wins over top-20 foes in consecutive weeks for the first time since 2002. It would also give Notre Dame a season sweep of Michigan State and Michigan for the first time since 2004.

This year’s meeting will mark the 40th meeting between Notre Dame and Michigan, with the Wolverines holding a 23-15-1 series lead. Michigan has won three straight in the series and the winning touchdown has been scored with under 27 seconds left in regulation on each occasion. trends: Wolverines are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings. Over is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings in Notre Dame. Home team is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings. Underdog is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 meetings.

SBA Staff likes Michigan +5.5 to cover here and possibly win. We are taking Michigan +5.5.
