Broncos vs Falcons Free Pick

The second week of the NFL season ends tonight when the Denver Broncos ride into Atlanta to face the Atlanta Falcons at the Georgia Dome. Both the Falcons and Broncos started their season 1-0 SU and ATS. The teams will be fighting for playoff spots at the end of the season as well as for their division titles. Last season both teams made the playoffs but Atlanta was eliminated in the first round and Denver in the second round.

During the offseason, the Broncos signed Peyton Manning to bolster their offense. The veteran missed all of the 2011 season due to neck surgeries, but showed he was back with an impressive showing in his first game last week for Denver. Manning completed 70% of his passes in week one for 255 yards and two touchdowns. He also was back under center making changes on the line of scrimmage and gesturing to his players before taking the snap. The Broncos won their opener against Pittsburgh by the score of 31-19.  

The Falcons opened their 2012 season last week with a win on the road at Kansas City. Atlanta blew the game wide open with 17 unanswered third quarter points and went on to win 40-24. Matt Ryan, the Falcons quarterback threw for three touchdowns, ran for one and had nearly 300 yards passing. Defensively the Falcons had a difficult time stopping the run as they allowed Kansas City to rack up 153 yards on the ground. That could be very costly against Denver. If Denver can establish a running game, it will make Manning’s passing threat even that much greater.

Head to head the Broncos won the last matchup against Atlanta 24-20 in 2005. In the past 8 head-to-head matchups, Denver is 7-1 SU as well as 5-3 ATS versus Atlanta. The line at this time has Denver as the underdog by 3 points with the total for over/under at 52.
