Jets at Steelers NFL Free Pick

September 16, 2012

The Jets’ first team didn’t reach the end zone in the preseason, but New York put up an NFL-high 48 points in a Week 1 blowout of Buffalo. Things are likely to get much tougher vs. a Pittsburgh team looking to avoid a 0-2 start for the first time in a decade.

Jets QB Mark Sanchez threw three touchdown passes, including two to rookie Stephen Hill, last week. Jeremy Kerley had a touchdown catch and a punt return for a score, and Antonio Cromartie took one of New York’s three interceptions of Ryan Fitzpatrick to the end zone. It was the most points the Jets have scored in a season opener.

Not everything went right, though, as the Jets allowed 195 yards rushing, including a career-high 169 by C.J. Spiller, and All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis left in the fourth quarter with a head injury. Revis is questionable as of this writing for Sunday. The 169 yards rushing Spiller last were the second-most Jets have given up under Rex Ryan. If Revis, considered by many the best cornerback in the league, can’t go, Kyle Wilson would start opposite Antonio Cromartie in his place. Revis helped set up the Jets’ first score Sunday with a diving interception, while Wilson picked off Fitzpatrick to set up New York’s second touchdown.

Pittsburgh was beaten Sunday night 31-19 in Denver. Ben Roethlisberger went 22-for-40 through the air for 245 yards, two touchdowns and an interception that was returned for a touchdown. Antonio Brown paced all Steelers receivers with 74 yards on four catches. Jonathan Dwyer finished with a team-high 43 yards on nine carries

While the Steelers may have looked rusty against Peyton Manning and the Broncos, the return of safety Ryan Clark and possibly linebacker James Harrison could create a tougher test for the Jets. Pittsburgh was No. 1 overall and against the pass last year on defense.

The Jets’ Sanchez was able to make effective tosses downfield in Week 1, because he was given excellent time in the pocket. A much-maligned Jets offensive line protected Sanchez, which enabled intermediate and deeper routes to develop. Look for Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano to use more slide and maximum protections to allow the perimeter receivers to stretch the field against an aggressive Steelers defense. Pittsburgh gave up just 10 ppg at home in 2011, lowest total in NFL.

Pittsburgh’s 2011 season began with a 35-7 loss against the Baltimore Ravens, but the Steelers bounced back the next week at home against the Seattle Seahawks with a 24-0 win. The players are working toward that type of turnaround this week. The Steelers have not started off a season 0-2 since 2002, when they finished the year 9-5-1, making the playoffs and defeating Cleveland in the wild card round and then losing to Tennessee the following week.

The Jets have won in Pittsburgh once in franchise history, 22-17 on Dec. 19, 2010. Steelers won rematch in AFC championship game just over a month later to reach Super Bowl for eighth time. Five of last six meetings have been decided by six points or less.
