Tigers vs White Sox Free Pick September 12 2012

Major League baseball has just over three weeks remaining in the regular season and there are still tight races in a number of divisions. One of the tightest races is in the American League Central division where the Chicago White Sox hold just a two game lead over the Detroit Tigers.

Chicago has lost six of its past ten games and on their current 10 game home stand is just 4-4. Detroit has also won only 4 of its past 10 games. This will be the third game of a four game series and each team has won one of the first two games. The series opened Monday night with a White Sox victory and Detroit came back and won on Tuesday night.

The Tigers could have inched closer in the past ten games due to the White Sox losing six of their last 10, but the Tigers offense has struggled in its past 12 games winning just 5 and hitting for an average of only .242 as a team. The Detroit pitchers however, have kept the Tigers close as they have combined over those same 12 games to have an ERA of just 2.74.

On Tuesday, the offense woke up with 10 hits, including 2 round trippers in their 5-3 win. Against Chicago this season the Tigers are 11-5 overall and 3-4 at Chicago. Detroit will start Max Scherzer on the mound. Scherzer’s season record is 15-6 with just a 3.85 ERA. In the last 13 games he has started, Scherzer is 9-1 and has an ERA of only 2.61. He leads every pitcher in the majors with 216 strikeouts. His record against Chicago is 0-2 in three starts.

Chicago will try to win tonight and Thursday to end their home stand at 6-4. If they can win tonight, they will extend their lead over Detroit to three games. Gavin Floyd will be activated from the team’s disabled list to start tonight on the mound. Floyd was sidelined due to an elbow ailment and prior to his injury was 9-9 with an ERA of 4.55. Against the Tigers, Floyd this season is 1-0, while he is 3-1 pitching at home versus Detroit in his career.

Detroit currently is the favorite at -140, with Chicago sitting at +120. The total is steady at 8.5. The Tigers look strong with Scherzer on the mound. Take Detroit to win, with the total paying out to those who opt for the OVER.
