49ers vs Packers Free Pick September 9 2012

September 09, 2012

The NFL season’s first full weekend starts today and there are a number of great early season matchups. One matchup pits two teams from the NFC playoffs last season – the San Francisco 49ers on the road against the Green Bay Packers. Both teams had impressive records in the regular season and each won their respective division in the NFC. The last time the two teams met was two seasons ago when the Packers took apart the 49ers to the tune of 34-16 and in the process easily covered a favorite spread of 9 points.

Aaron Rogers leads the Packers at quarterback again this season. Rogers was the NFL MVP last season after throwing for 4,643 yards, 48 touchdowns and completing over 68% of his passes. Rogers only had five interceptions the entire season. Rogers will have his three favorite targets to throw to again this season in tight end Jermichael Finely and wide receivers Donald Driver and Greg Jennings.

The 49ers will have Alex Smith back as their quarterback. Smith enjoyed his best season as a 49er last season completing 61% of this passes, passing for more than 3,140 yards, throwing 17 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions. The reliable Frank Gore will anchor the running attack, while the now unretired Randy Moss will help at wide receiver.

Green Bay defensively struggled all of last season and was ranked 32nd in total yardage, allowing over 410 per game. Because of the team’s lack of stopping opposing offenses, the Packer offense was pressured into needing to score on almost every possession. The 49ers on the other hand, had one of the best defenses in the NFC and that should be the same again this season.

Green Bay ATS is 5-0-1 in their last six meetings versus San Francisco. The Packers are currently favored by 5 points over the 49ers with the over under total resting at 45. Smart money takes the Packers to cover and the total to cash out on the OVER.
