SMU vs Baylor Free Pick September 2 2012

September 02, 2012

The Southern Methodist University Mustangs take on the Baylor Bears to open the college football season for both teams. The game will be Baylor’s first without Kendall Wright and superstar Robert Griffin III who have both gone on to the NFL. Replacing Griffin III at quarterback will be Nick Florence. He is a capable replacement as he played for the injured superstar in 2009.

SMU will start its last season in Conference USA before heading next year to the Big East Conference. SMU ended its season last year with a win in the Compass Bowl against Pittsburgh. The Mustangs were 8-5 on the season last year. Coach June Jones’ run and shoot attack will put lots of points on the board. The team has Garrett Gilbert playing quarterback, who is a transfer from Texas and was the 2009 Gatorade Player of the Year for the Longhorns.

Baylor was 10-3 last season and will have transfer Darryl Stonum a wide receiver in the lineup for the game tonight. The duo of Jarred Salubi and Lache Seastrunk will carry the load on the ground for the Bears. The defense will have eight starters back from last season.

SMU has a lead of 36-35-7 in the all time series between the two teams. However, Baylor has won the last nine consecutive games between the two teams. The Bears have won six straight to end last season, which is the third longest winning streak in the nation. Since 1986, SMU has not won a game to open the season on the road. The current line has Baylor as the favorite by 7 ½ points with the over/under sitting at 58. Take the Mustangs ATS and the Bears straight up with the total cashing out to the OVER.

Prediction: Baylor 40 – SMU 33
