Georgia Tech vs Virginia Tech Free Pick September 3, 2012

September 02, 2012

The Virginian Tech Hokies open their college football season versus the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Monday September 3. VT has been pegged as the odds on favorite to win the coastal division of the Atlantic Coast Conference and play in the ACC championship game.

Only Florida State leads the Hokies in overall rankings in the ACC. Georgia Tech are picked to finish behind the Hokies and Miami in the coastal division, but with an upset in the game, could change their chances of winning the division. The Hokies have the edge from odds makers in the game due to playing at night at home.

The Hokies defense will shine this season as they were ranked nationally in the top ten in overall defense last season and eight of their 11 starters have returned. Last season, the Hokies defense had 41 sacks. The offense of GT could make it difficult for the Hokies, as GT has a triple-option threat and can create long time consuming drives on the ground.

Last season, the Yellow Jackets were ranked second nationally in the number of rushing yards per game at 315. In each of the last seven years, the winner of this opening night game for the ACC has played in the season sending ACC Championship. The Hokies have won six of nine meetings between the two teams, including a win last season by the score of 37-26.

The Hokies will look to get started quickly in the game on Monday however, they have not scored in the first quarter of any of the past four meetings with GT. In the past six games between the two teams, the underdog has a record of 5-1 ATS. The current line has Virginia Tech as the favorite by a spread of 7 ½ points, with the over/under sitting at 49 points after opening at 51.

Smart money takes the Hokies, less the points to win SU and ATs with the total cashing out to the UNDER.
