MLB Preview and Picks Thursday August 30, 2012

Oakland at Cleveland – A’s RHP Jarrod Parker (8-7, 3.52) vs. Indians RHP Justin Masterson (10-11, 4.60): Parker has followed up a three-game slide with consecutive quality starts. After tossing eight scoreless frames vs. Cleveland on Aug. 19, the righty didn’t factor into the decision on Friday in Tampa Bay, where he allowed three runs in six innings. … Masterson ended the Tribe’s nine-game losing streak on Saturday by holding the Yankees to one run on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings at home. He struck out six and walked two. Bet on Oakland to win here.

Chicago White Sox at Baltimore  — White Sox LHP Jose Quintana (5-2, 2.86) vs. Orioles LHP Zach Britton (3-1, 5.59): After a 42-pitch first inning during which he threw just 21 strikes, Quintana settled down and lasted 5 2/3 innings against the Mariners. The southpaw allowed three runs and four walks but all of them came in that rough first frame. …  Britton allowed two runs on four hits, walking two and striking out six over 6.2 innings of a 6-4 win over Toronto on Friday night.  He still has a 6.23 ERA in three home starts in 2012. Take the Orioles.

Seattle at Minnesota – Mariners RHP Blake Beavan (8-8, 5.10) vs. Twins LHP Brian Duensing (3-9, 5.28): Beavan didn’t have his normal command Saturday as he took the loss in a 5-4 decision to the White Sox. Since being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma in midseason, the big right-hander is 5-2 with a 4.09 ERA in eight starts. … Duensing allowed a career-high nine runs on 10 hits in 2 1/3 innings of a 9-3 loss to the Rangers on Saturday. He’s 0-2 with a 3.18 ERA in five career outings, including one start, against the Mariners. We like Seattle here.

Tampa Bay at Toronto – Rays LHP Matt Moore (10-7, 3.60) vs. Jays RHP Carlos Villaneuva (6-4, 3.30): Moore didn’t factor into the decision Friday after allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk over 6 1/3 innings to go with seven strikeouts against the A’s. He remains unbeaten since July 22. … Villanueva allowed four runs on five hits while striking out four during his last start against Baltimore. Chris Davis did most of the damage with two homers, and it was just the second time in 10 starts Villanueva surrendered more than three runs.  Take Toronto.

Detroit at Kansas City – Tigers RHP Porcello (9-9, 4.60) vs. Royals RHP Jeremy Guthrie (5-12, 5.71): Porcello has lost his past three starts, the last two of them low-scoring duels on one big run-scoring hit each time after taking scoreless games into the sixth. He beat the Royals in their lone meeting May 1, with eight innings and three runs. … Guthrie, after three straight starts in which he didn’t permit an earned run in 22 2/3 innings, faltered on Saturday night at Boston. He couldn’t get out of the third inning and gave up six earned runs but the Royals won in extra innings. This is my personal favorite. I love Detroit tonight -130.

Boston at LA Angels – Red Sox LHP Jon Lester (8-10, 4.98) vs. Angels RHP Zack GReinke (11-5, 3.87): Lester’s on a season-high three-game win streak, with five runs allowed in his last 20 innings. He’s got a 5.02 ERA in three career starts at Angel Stadium. … After allowing four runs or more in four consecutive starts for the first time in his career, Greinke bounced back with 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball against the Tigers on Friday. He is 1-4, despite a 2.88 ERA in his career against Boston. Take LA here.
