Jacksonville Jaguars 2012 Outlook and Odds

With a new owner, new general manager and new coach things should change in Jacksonville. They certainly cannot get any worse as the team went 5-11 last season, while trying to get a rookie quarterback used to playing in the NFL. This season the team behind its new head coach Mike Mularkey, will try to steer the franchise back on course.

However, one big if remains. That is IF star running back Maurice Jones-Drew will play. MJD is currently holding out to renegotiate his contract with the team. The team owner has said he will not negotiate with the running back nor will he trade him to another team.

Last season MJD was the majority of the team’s offense as he ran for 1,606 yards for a team that ranked last in total offense in the league with only 259 yards a game. Quarterback Blaine Gabbert struggled last season, his first, completing only 51% of his passes while throwing 12 touchdowns but almost an equal amount, 11, interceptions. MJD also caught 43 passes out of the backfield for over 370 yards. If he is a no show, then Rashad Jennings will play in his place. Jennings missed last season, but is considered a capable backup. The Jaguars drafted Justin Blackmon, a wide receiver and he should be a positive impact on the offense from the first game.

Defensively the Jaguars played well last season. They were the sixth ranked defense in the league, allowing only 21 points per game. The line does not have a good passer rusher, but Jeremy Mincey is the best of the bunch. The three linebackers on the starting unit might be the best collection of tacklers in the AFC. In the secondary, the Jaguars signed free agent Aaron Ross from the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants. He will sure up a week secondary with the help of strong safety Dawan Landry.

The over/under for the Jaguars this season is 5.5 and the UNDER is at -135, with the OVER at nearly even odds. The Jaguars are +1500 to take the AFC South title, +5000 to win the AFC Championship and +10000 to win the Super Bowl.
