Minnesota Vikings 2012 Outlook and Odds

August 29, 2012

The Minnesota Vikings have spent the past two years rebuilding, as they finished a disappointing 4-12 last season. Fans are ready for the team to return to stardom to the days of Alan Page, Jim Eller and Fran Tarkenton. However, they are in a division that is loaded with strong teams, as they will have to play two games against the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions, all teams that could make the playoffs this season.

Leslie Frazier, the head coach is on the bubble as he is 6-16 in just under two full seasons and if the team does not show good progress this season under his tutelage, he likely will be looking for work next year. Offensively the team averaged only 21 points per game on 330 yards. The offense has two stars but they do not have enough supporting players.

At quarterback, the team has been weak with Christian Ponder struggling in his rookie season. At running back position, the team has its best all round player in Adrian Peterson. He tore his ACL after 12 games last season and he already had 970 on the ground. If he is not 100% the first week, Toby Gerhart is a capable backup. At receiver the team is very weak and only Percy Harvin who caught 87 passes is a standout. After Harvin, mediocrity sets in very quickly. The offensive line has its problems and allowed 49 sacks last season. If there is no progress there, the year will be over before it starts.

On defense, there was only one team worse last year than the Vikings. They gave up 28 points per game. However, what is very peculiar is they led the league in sack with 50. The linebackers are young but solid and the secondary is the weakest part of the defense.

Odds makers have the Vikings over/under win number at 6 with the under at -135. They are +3000 to win their division and the latest odds for the Super Bowl have them listed at 100-1.

The Vikings will have a very tough time stopping opponents from scoring and if they cannot score themselves, the season will be long and gloomy. I predict them to go 5-11 on the year and finish last in their division.
