Tennessee Titans 2012 Outlook and Odds

August 27, 2012

The Tennessee Titans were competitive under first year coach Mike Munchak last season, but there is lots of room for improvement. Munchak has to make a big decision this season – play veteran quarterback Matt Hasselbeck from the start of the season or roll the dice with youngster Jake Locker.

The safe choice is Hasselbeck and will probably give Tennessee the best opportunity to reach the postseason. However, Hasselbeck has been injury prone in his career and is a veteran of 14 seasons. Locker on the other hand has excellent mobility, but he has not been all that accurate in his passing game.  Odds are, say the odds makers that Locker will get the nod to start the season.

Chris Johnson returns and that will help the running game. He played last season but his mind was elsewhere. He continues with his goal of becoming the only running back in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in one season, twice in his career. Kenny Britt will help the receiver corps once he returns from an injury and then he may even be suspended for off field activities.

Defensively the team should be a solid unit overall. They are very good in the red zone. They lost one of the best cornerbacks in the game in Cortland Finnegan, but Michael Griffin was help make up for the loss of Finnegan. Will Witherspoon, Colin McCarthy and Akeem Ayers will be the linebacker unit.

The odds makers have placed the Titans at +3500 to be Super Bowl champs this season. They are rated second at +275 to be AFC South champs and they have a regular season over/under win total of 7.5.

The Titans will finish second in their division thanks to an excellent season from Chris Johnson, however their 8-8 record will not get them into the postseason.
