Miami Dolphins 2012 Outlook and Odds

August 27, 2012

The Miami Dolphins played competitively last season even though they did not make the playoffs. The question is will they play as well this year or not. Miami drafted Ryan Tannehill out of Texas A&M and he was named the future of the franchise at quarterback.

The Dolphin coaching staff has to determine whether to throw him into the fray from the first game of the season or work him into the starting quarterback position over time. The Dolphins will have a hard time in one of the best divisions in the NFL. Trying to compete and have a chance to win playing two games each against the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets and New England Patriots will take a lot out of the team when they face other opponents.

Reggie Bush returns to help the running attack along with Daniel Thomas, The Dolphins sent Brandon Marshall their best wide receiver, 81 catches, to Chicago and that left them with possibly the worst receiving corps in all of football. Chad Johnson was added and then released. That leaves Davonne Bess and Brian Hartline to head the receivers, with very little other talent on the roster at that position.

Defensively look for the Dolphins to improve on a strong season. They yielded less than 20 points per game and had 41 sacks. They should be a tough unit again this season and will have be on the field quite often if the Miami offense will be led by a rookie who will have very few options at wide receiver. At linebacker, they might have the best unit in football between Cameron Wake, Kevin Burnett and Karlos Dansby.

Odds makers have put the Dolphins at a 75-1 long shots to be the Super Bowl champs in 2013. They are also 25-1 to win the AFC Championship. The Dolphins over-under win total is 7 games during the regular season. They have been given 15-1 odds to be champs of the AFC East. Look for a middle of the pack finish at 7-9 or maybe 8-8 in Tannehill’s first season running the offense.
