Cleveland Browns 2012 Outlook and Odds

August 25, 2012

The Cleveland Browns regular season has not even started and they already have the worst odds to make the postseason. The Browns were recently placed at -2000 to not make the playoffs. Cleveland has had one winning season in its last nine seasons. They have not appeared in the postseason in 10 seasons and that streak should not end any time soon, especially this year. Last season the Browns were 4-12 and Mike Holmgren is trying to rebuild the team from square one. However, the team is one to two years away from being in playoff contention.

The mediocre offense could only score 13.6 points and accumulate 289 yards each game last season. That ranked them close to the bottom in both categories. The team had a tremendously poor red zone offense. Time and time again, they settled for field goals because they could not punch the ball across the goal line. Brandon Weeden, the Browns rookie quarterback will fight for the starting job with Colt McCoy and will be the odds on favorite to earn it. The running attack will also be in the hands of a rookie, Trent Richardson from Alabama, the one true potential superstar the team has right now. At wide receiver or tight end, the time has no high caliber names but Greg Little should be their best option.

Defensively the team will be strong. They allowed only 332 yards and 19 points per game last season. If the offense can generate points, which is unlikely, the Browns could surprise teams in the AFC North. No big names are on the line or linebacker but they have good capable players that are talented. The same secondary from last season returns with Joe Haden at cornerback and Sheldon Brown. Safeties TJ Ward and Usama Young will make the secondary strong.

Sports books have the win total for the Browns at five with -115 for the OVER. The odds to win the NFC North division are +2500. This season the addition of Weeden at QB and Richardson at RB will help. Look for the Browns to go 6-10.
