Yankees vs Indians Free Pick August 24 2012

August 24, 2012

The New York Yankees face the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field in Cleveland tonight to open a three game set. Both teams have not been playing their best baseball of the season. The Yankees were swept earlier in the week by the Chicago White Sox and their record now stands at 72-52. Even though they are 20 games over .500 they have lost three consecutive and five of their last ten to see their lead evaporate to just 2 ½ games from hard charging Tampa Bay.

Cleveland is in even a worse predicament. The Indians have lost eight consecutive games, 9 of their last 10 and are 54-70 on the season 14 ½ games behind the first place Chicago White Sox in the American League Central. The situation is so dire in Cleveland that Manager Manny Acta has joked that the owners will most likely not fire the full roster of players, as that has never been done in baseball  therefore he is the one who will probably be fired.

Tonight the Indians send Corey Kluber to face the Yankees. Kluber is 0-2 for this season with a 6.27 ERA. Kluber has not pitched well of late and his not made it out of the fifth inning in three of his last four outings.

The Yankees received positive news on their day off Thursday, the first day off in 20 days. CC Sabathia announced he was fit to return to play and will start in the series opener tonight. Sabathia has been on the disabled list due to soreness in his left elbow since August 6. The southpaw and former Cleveland ace has a record of 12-3 this season with a 3.56 ERA. His career record against his former club is 2-1 in five starts. He has pitched better versus the Indians in Cleveland, as his ERA is only 2.14.

The line currently has the Yankees as the favorite at -230 and the Indians at +190. The total is sitting on 9. New York will win this matchup behind Sabathia, with the total paying out to bettors who choose the OVER.
