College Football Preview: #3 Alabama Crimson Tide

Raise your hand if you would rather see anybody else win the National Championship this season. You’re not alone. Right now it looks as if the Mayans being right about the end of the world coming before Christmas is the only way to stop Nick Saban and his Tide team.

The Tide loses several guys to the NFL and still are ranked in the top three. They don’t rebuild in Tuscaloosa these days. They reload. The only thing that will stop this train will be the day Nick Saban is no longer their coach. Saban has it all. He’s a great coach, great recruiter and he’s at a program where he can maximize his talents. They have the facilities, the tradition and the rabid fan base to make his job recruiting that much easier.

This year’s Tide might be a little bit different than last year’s National Championship team which relied on what might have been the best defense in the history of the game. Four of those guys were drafted in the first round.

This Bama bunch may be a bit more offense oriented. The O-Line was a big nasty bunch a year ago led by Barrett Jones. They are all back this year except for Alfred McCullough and William Vlachos. Back are Chance Warmack, Anthony Steen and D.J. Fluker.

A.J. McCarron returns to start at quarterback. He will have Ed Lacy to hand the ball off to. Lacy showed signs of being another super running back in the Ingram/Richardson mold last year. We can guarantee he will have holes to run through.

The Tide defense will be young an inexperienced, but they are still loaded with talent. If you keep up with recruiting, you notice Alabama is always right up there near the top every year. So they’ve got studs coming in to take the place of the departed stars.

Bama’s schedule starts off pretty mean with a game against Michigan in Dallas on opening week.  The following week they get a breather with Western Kentucky and then it’s on to Arkansas. So Bama needs to get old in a hurry on defense. If they start 3-0 then watch out.

FAU and Ole Miss come to town following the Arkansas game. Then back to back road games at Missouri and at Tennessee follow. We aren’t sure how both of their East games were road games. The Sec is still figuring out the scheduling with the new teams. They haven’t quite worked all the bugs out yet.

Mississippi State comes to town before the Tide visits LSU in a game that may decided a berth in the BCS National Championship Game once again. After the LSU game they have three home games to end the regular season with Texas A&M, Western Carolina and Auburn in the Iron Bowl.

Wagerweb has Alabama at +350 to win the National Championship again this year. We would advise not to bet against them.
