Arizona Cardinals 2012 Outlook and Odds

The heat is on in Arizona – on the players, the coaches and management – as the fans want a winner and the team’s 8-8 season last year is not good enough for them. The Cardinals started their season 3-7 and finished 5-1 so there was excitement that can be built on if the team can come out with a strong start this season. Coach Ken Whisenhunt will start his sixth season this fall and is 40-40 at Arizona, but the team has not been able to get past the retirement of Kurt Warner.

Offensively the Cardinals only averaged 19.5 points and 325 yards per game last season. At quarterback, they were shaky at best with Kevin Kolb leading the team. He struggled with a concussion and turf toe much of last season. This season he starts with a clean slate and needs to produce better than 1,950 yards, 9 TDs, and 8 interceptions.

Beanie Wells had a good season at running back, as he was injury free much of the time. Ryan Williams was injured for the season last year and with him back, it should help tremendously. Larry Fitzgerald is the teams all world wide receiver but since Anquan Boldin went to Baltimore the team has not found a No. 2 to help Fitzgerald.

Defensively the team was like Swiss cheese the first seven games – full of holes. However, they turned around and allowed 23 or less points in all of the last nine games of the season. On the line, they are strong with Calais Campbell and Darnell Dockett. The linebackers are young as they only have five years experience between three starters. The secondary is not strong as it lost Richard Marshall, but has two strong players in Patrick Peterson and Adrian Wilson.

Currently Arizona is +450 to win the NFC West title, +2500 to lift the NFC Championship trophy and 50-1 to win the Super Bowl. The team should continue in its current state of mediocrity for another season with a 7-9 finish this year.
