San Diego Chargers 2012 Odds and Outlook

August 22, 2012

The AFC West will be a much more competitive division this season as; the Denver Broncos have Peyton Manning at the helm; the Oakland Raiders have a new coach and Carson Palmer back for an entire season; and the Kansas City Chiefs will have both Matt Cassel and Jamaal Charles back from injury. Rounding out the division is the San Diego Chargers. The Chargers started out quick last season by winning four of their first give games, but then ended the season 4-7 to finish at 8-8 and lose the division to the Denver Broncos.

The Chargers have enjoyed being the perennial favorite to win the division for the past decade, but the other three teams are now as good if not better than San Diego. Over the past 10 years, the Chargers have been very good on the offensive side of the ball. Including last season, they have averaged over 25 points per game for eight consecutive seasons. Last year they scored 25.4 per game and average close to 400 yards per game on offense. One key for the Chargers is turnovers. In 2011, the Chargers were a -7 for turnover differential and that does not wins games.

Quarterback Philip Rivers is one of the league’s best, but 2011 was subpar for him. He had 4,245 yards passing and 27 TDs, but threw 20 interceptions in the process. Ryan Matthews averaged 4.9 yards a carry last season and caught 50 balls out of the backfield. Vincent Jackson the team’s best receiver is gone and the team will look to Malcom Floyd and perennial all pro TE Antonio Gates.

Defensively the team in 2011 slipped to 16th in the league after being no. 1 in 2010. They picked up some free agents and should be able to improve on last season when they gave up over 23 points per game.

The Chargers are favored -125 to win less than 9.5 games, and is second to take the AFC West at +165. The odds for the AFC Championship are +1300 and the Super Bowl +3000. I like the Chargers to go 9-7 finishing second in the AFC West and squeaking in for a wildcard berth.
