College Football Preview: #4 Oregon Ducks

August 22, 2012

Now we are getting down to the National Championship favorites in our top 25 college football preview. At #4 we have the Oregon Ducks. Oregon will once again be a prolific scoring machine this season. The Ducks are the favorites along with USC to play in the PAC 12   Championship Game at the end of the season. If things go like the experts think, the Pac 12 Game will be what the SEC Championship Game has become, a de fact o semifinal game for the National Championship.

LaMichael James is gone. Enter De’Anthony Thomas and Kenjon Barner to take over the rushing duties for the Ducks. Barner rushed for 939 yards in 152 attempts with 11 touchdowns last year. Thomas had 595 yards rushing on 55 attempts and 605 receiving yards on 46 catches. Thomas scored 16 touchdowns, nine receiving and seven rushing. So the running backs positions are in capable hands (and feet).

Gone is quarterback Darron Thomas. Replacing him will likely be Bryan Bennett who threw for 369 yards and ran for 200 yards in a back-up role. Marcus Mariota is also a candidate for the starting nod.

Mariota impressed in the Ducks Spring game when his squad beat Bennett’s 41-14. He was 18 for 26 and 202 yards and also ran for 99 yards. He threw for one touchdown and ran for two more including one of 82 yards.

Oregon’s schedule starts out easy enough. They open with Arkansas State, Fresno State, Tennessee Tech and Arizona, all at home. Arkansas State may give them a go for a bit, but they won’t have the horses to hang in there for very long.

After Arizona, the Ducks finally make a road trip to Washington State. Then it’s back home against a tough Washington team that will be the Ducks first test of the season. From there it is off to Arizona State, then back home against Colorado.

November starts off with a huge game at USC, which might be the first of two meetings. A #1 ranking for the winner could very well be at stake in this one. Then it’s another road game at Cal, home to Stanford and at Oregon State for the Civil War.

Wagerweb has Oregon at +185 to win the PAC 12 Championship. USC is the favorite at -215. We personally think Oregon may be the way to go for the national title as well as the conference. They and their system is just that good.
