Braves vs Nationals Free Pick August 21 2012

The nation’s capital will be the scene of an excellent matchup between two of the best teams in baseball when the Atlanta Braves visit Nationals Park to take on the Washington Nationals. Washington with a record of 76-46 leads Atlanta by six games in the NL East. Atlanta has an overall record of 70-52. On Monday night, the game went 13 innings before the Nationals were able to win 5-4. The win was the second straight for Washington and the seventh over their past 10 games. The loss was Atlanta’s third consecutive and dropped them to just five wins in their last 10 games.

The Nationals have been carried all season by one of the best pitching staffs in all of baseball. Tonight, their ace, Stephen Strasburg will take the mound. Strasburg has an overall record on the season of 14-5 with an ERA of just 2.91. He is in contention for the Cy Young Award for the league. During August, he has started three games and his ERA over those three games is just 1.50. He scattered four hits, fanned seven and gave up two runs in his last outing to defeat the San Francisco Giants by the score of 6-4.

Atlanta is currently leading the NL Wildcard race by three games over three different teams. The Braves however, would like to knock games off the Nationals’ lead heading into September to have a shot at catching them for the division title. Tonight the Braves will have Paul Maholm on the mound facing the Nationals. Maholm’s record this season is 11-7 with an ERA of 3.39. He won last week 6-1 over San Diego after scattering five hits and giving up just a single run. He has not faced Washington this season, but last year while with Pittsburgh he was 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA against the Nationals.

At this point, the line has the Nationals favored -160 to Atlanta’s +145. The game total is at 7. Smart money is on the Nationals to win this contest tonight, with the total making winners of the UNDER bettors.
