Kansas City Chiefs 2012 Odds and Outlook

The NFL season is right around the corner and the AFC West is bound to be a tough division, as the Denver Broncos acquired Peyton Manning and the Oakland Raiders will have Carson Palmer back with a new coach. The Kansas City Chiefs came from the middle of the pack in 2010 to win the AFC West crown when they finished the season 10-6. In 2011, the season was rocky, as the team experienced ups and down and they ended by losing 6 of their last 9 games to finish 7-9 and out of the playoffs.

The Chiefs fired their coach Todd Haley during the season and replaced him with Romero Crennel who will remain on as the head coach this season. Offensively the Chiefs struggled last season. Injuries forced starting quarterback Matt Cassel to miss games as well as Jamaal Charles the starting running back.

The Chiefs averaged just 13 points per game and 311 total yards. Those numbers should change, as both Charles and Cassel will return completely injury free. This season look for Cassel to be the starter with Brady Quinn, the former Denver Bronco as the backup. Charles was injured in week 2 with a torn ACL and has had almost a complete year to rehabilitate the injury and should be 100%. At wide out, the team likes Dwayne Bowes, Steve Breaston and Jon Baldwin.

Defensively the Chiefs played well last season giving up just 333 yards per game and 21 points. That ranked them in the top half of the league defensively. Their defensive line is young and their linebacker corps is solid with Justin Houston and Javon Belcher. The secondary will be much improved with Brandon Flowers returning, while they picked up Stanford Routt. Eric Berry returns as strong safety.

The Chiefs are favored at -125 odds to win OVER 8 games. However, they have +300 odds to top the AFC West and +1500 to win the AFC Championship, while in the Super Bowl they have +4000 odds. I look for the Chiefs to have a 9-7 season good enough for third place in the AFC West and a long shot at a wildcard.
