The two top teams in the National League West meet tonight in Los Angeles to start a three game series. The Los Angeles Dodgers will host the San Francisco Giants at Chavez Ravine. The teams are only a half game apart atop the NL West and have flip flopped for the top spot for most of the past three months Los Angeles took over the spot on Sunday with a win and a Giants loss.
The Giants have lost five of their past 10 games, but their biggest loss may have come last Wednesday and it was not even during a game. The league suspended Melky Cabrera, the Giants’ All Star left fielder, for 50 games. He failed a drug test for testing positive to testosterone. His absence leaves a huge hole offensively for the Giants, as he was enjoying the best season of his career hitting .348 until his suspension.
The Dodgers will send southpaw Clayton Kershaw to the mound against the Giants tonight. Kershaw is 11-6 this season with a 2.90 ERA and has won four straight starts. He last faced the Giants at the end of July and threw a five hitter shutting the Giants out 4-0. Since the start of his 2011 season, Kershaw has a record of 6-2 with a 1.25 ERA against San Francisco.
Madison Bumgarner will start on the mound for the Giants in tonight’s matchup. Bumgarner has a record this season of 13-7 with a 2.97 ERA. In his last outing on Tuesday, he tossed a five hitter to defeat Washington 6-1. In seven starts, since the All Star game, Bumgarner is 3-2 with a 2.25 ERA. He has not pitched against the Dodgers this season, but in six career starts against them, he has a record of 4-2 with a 3.72 ERA.
Currently the line has Los Angeles as the favorite at -155 with San Francisco at +140. The total is sitting at 6.5. Take the Dodgers to win tonight and the total to make winners of those bettors taking the OVER.
