College Football Preview: #6 Georgia Bulldogs

August 20, 2012

At #6 in our Top 25 countdown we have the Georgia Bulldogs. The Bulldogs are coming off the SEC East Championship a year ago. They won 10 straight games at one point ending the season at 10-4.

Georgia returns 14 starters from last year including junior quarterback and three-year starter Aaron Murray. Murray may be the SEC’s best signal caller. Last season he threw for 3149 yards and 35 touchdowns.

The Bulldogs suffered a huge loss when running back Isiah Crowell was kicked off the team on weapons charges in June. He rushed for 850 yards a year ago and was being counted on to lead the rushing attack. Somehow, instead of prison, he is now at Alabama State where he will play for the Hornets this season. Only in America.

Taveres King will be back to lead the receiving corps. He had eight touchdown catches last year and 705 yards.

The Bulldog defense will again be tough. Jarvis Jones and Bacarri Rambo will return to lead the very talented Bulldog D.

As usual, the Dawgs recruited very well again this year. Watch for running back Keith Marshall to step in and make an impact in the wake of Crowell’s expulsion.

The schedule, by SEC standards, is very easy for the Bulldogs. The two SEC West games are against Ole Miss and Auburn. Although Auburn can be very tough, it sure beats the heck out of Alabama (who Tennessee plays), LSU (who Florida gets) and Arkansas (South Carolina has to play them).

The Dogs begin the season with Buffalo before traveling to Missouri. That might be a trap game because the Tigers will be sky-high for their first SEC game.

FAU, Vanderbilt and Tennessee at home followed by South Carolina on the road follow the Mizzou game. Then after a bye week Georgia will visit Kentucky, face Florida in Jacksonville, host Ole Miss and visit Auburn to close out their conference schedule. They end the season with Georgia Southern and Georgia Tech at home.

Intertops has their over/under at 9.5 wins for the regular season. They should be 5-0 heading into the South Carolina game. Assuming the Gamecocks win, which is no certainty, they should go at worst 9-3. That’s with losses to two of the three games between Auburn, Florida and Georgia Tech. Tech is a home game so Georgia wins that one. So we’re at nine wins with only South Carolina, Florida and Auburn in doubt. All they need is one of the three, so we like the over.
