Teams are battling for playoffs spots, as the major league baseball season nears the completion of summer and heads to fall. In the American League, the East division is one of the most competitive with three teams fighting for a spot in the playoffs. Today the Baltimore Orioles take on the Detroit Tigers and try to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Currently, the Orioles would qualify for one of the two wildcard spots in the AL if the season were to end today. They trail the New York Yankees by six games for the lead in the AL East and the Tampa Bay Rays by one game for second place in the division and the first wildcard spot. Over the last 11 games played, the Orioles are 8-3.
Detroit has had a good second half of the season, as they are 28-17 since June 28, the best in the American League. At the present time, they trail the AL Central leading Chicago White Sox by just 1 ½ games and the Orioles by a game for the second wildcard berth.
In this series, Prince Fielder and fellow slugger Miguel Cabrera have provided the only offense for Detroit. The two have combined for five walks, three long balls and five runs batted in, while going 6 for 10. The rest of the Detroit lineup has no homers, two runs batted in and are a combined 7 for 50.
Today the Orioles will send Wei-Yin Chen to the mound. Chen has a record this season of 11-7 with an ERA of 3.70. He will face Doug Fister of the Tigers. Fister is 7-7 on the season with an ERA of 3.24.
Currently the line has the Tigers as the favorite with -180 and the Orioles with +160. The total is currently sitting resting at 8.5. Take Baltimore behind the consistent pitching of Chen to shut down the Tigers and win the game. The total will make winners of the UNDER.
