The Atlanta Braves are on a roll, winning five straight and 18 of their past 23 but cannot seem to dent the four game lead of the Washington Nationals in the National League East. Tonight the Braves will go for their sixth straight victory when they play the Los Angeles Dodgers in the second game of their three game set at Turner Field in Atlanta. The Braves won in 11 innings on Friday night 4-3 on a pinch hit by Juan Francisco.
Atlanta is 70-49 on the season and leading for the wild card spots for the NL. They are comfortably ahead of both the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals in that race. However, the Braves want to catch the Nationals and win the NL East. The Dodgers have a record of 65-55 this season and fell out of first place Friday with their loss to Atlanta and a win by the San Francisco Giants.
In tonight’s matchup, the Braves will send right hander Ben Sheets to the mound. Sheets this season is 4-2 with a 2.13 ERA. He has not pitched recently as he did earlier in the season. Sheets came back this season after missing two years due to Tommy John surgery on his elbow and was 3-0 to start with a 0.50 ERA, but in his last three outings Sheets is just 1-2 with a 3.60 ERA.
Los Angeles will have Aaron Harang starting in tonight’s matchup. Harang has a record of 8-7 this season and a 3.76 ERA. Harang has allowed three or less runs in 12 of 14 starts this season. He won his last start 5-4 against Pittsburgh by allowing five hits and two runs in six innings of work. Harang is 1-3 in his career versus the Braves.
The line has the Braves as the favorite playing at home -146 to +136 for the Dodgers. The total is 8. Take the Braves to win and the total to pay out to smart money bettors taking the OVER.
