In all of baseball, the fiercest and most competitive rivalry has to be the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. The two hook up tonight to start a three game series in New York. This season there is not as much on the line as there usually is at this time of the season when the two American League East rivals meet. Usually in August, both teams are fighting for a playoff spot. This season however, the Yankees are on top of the AL East by six games, while Boston is 12 ½ game back in fourth place fighting amongst themselves.
Boston’s off the field problems with manager Bobby Valentine have become an on the field distraction and it shows in their record of 58-61. Boston will have Franklin Morales start tonight against the Yankees. Morales is 3-3 this season and has a 3.29 ERA. The southpaw experienced his worst start of the season against the Yankees in Yankee Stadium July 7. He pitched just 3 1/3 innings and gave up six runs in a 6-1 loss. He has only allowed seven round trippers all season and four of the seven were in that game against New York July 7.
The Yankees own the best record in the American League at 70-48. They have just come off a series with the Texas Rangers where they defeated the Rangers in three of the four games. Tonight Phil Hughes will be on the mound for the Yankees. Hughes has a season record of 11-10 with a 4.44 ERA. Hughes has had a rough past two starts. In those two games, he has not lasted beyond the fifth inning. However, Hughes has fared very well in his last five appearances at Yankee Stadium. The right hander is 4-0 with a 2.00 ERA in those five games. Included in those four wins was a win against Boston 10-3 on July 27.
The line currently has New York favored at -140, with Boston sitting at +130. The total for runs is at 9.5. Take the Yankees to win, with the total cashing out to those bettors who take the UNDER.
