Rays vs Angels Free Pick August 16 2012

The Tampa Rays take on the Los Angeles Angels tonight for the first game of a four game series in LA. The Rays entered the records book last night against the Seattle Mariners, but for all the wrong reasons. Felix Hernandez struck out 12 Tampa hitters on the way to a 1-0 perfect games against the Rays. Tampa became the first team in the history of major league baseball to be on the receiving end of three perfect games during the regular season.

In games that immediately follow a no-hitter that has been thrown against Tampa, the Rays are 2-2. Prior to the loss, Tampa had won 7 out of their last 8. The Rays are 63-54 on the season, one game behind Baltimore for second place in the AL East and in contention for a wildcard spot.

Tonight against Los Angeles, the Rays will send David Price to the mound. Price has become the ace this season for Tampa. The southpaw is 15-4 overall this season and has a 2.50 ERA. He has pitched seven times in his career against the Angels and has a record of 3-2 with a 3.48 ERA. He defeated Los Angeles 5-0 on a five-hitter back on April 24.

The Angels have a season record of 62-56 and have won two straight to tie the Oakland Athletics for second place in the AL West, only six games behind front running Texas. Against Tampa this season, the Angels have lost five of six games and have been outscored 18-8.

Dan Haren will start on the mound for the Angels in tonight’s game. Haren has a record this season of 8-9 with a 4.68 ERA. Over his last nine starts, he has allowed opposing teams to hit at least a home run in each of the games. Haren has a career record of 7-3 against Tampa in 12 starts. His ERA during those 12 games is just 2.60. On July 27, in Tampa, he defeated the Rays 3-1.

The current line has the Rays as the favorite behind Price at -117, with the Angels at +107. The total is sitting at 7.5. Take the Rays to win with their ace Price on the mound, with the total cashing out for those who take the UNDER.
