Washington Redskins 2012 Odds and Outlook

Mike Shanahan showed up in Washington with lots of expectations and management had many expectations of him. Neither one has panned out as of yet. However, those things could change due to the number one pick in the draft, quarterback Robert Griffin III. Griffin III has the talent, strength, speed and skills to be the real deal. He is a player than can change the way the game is played. He is a rookie so undoubtedly there will be a learning curve, but as the season progresses, he will most definitely make far more impressive plays than mistakes.

His receivers should help the offense as Santana Moss finally will have some talent around in Pierre Garcon, Josh Morgan at the wide outs and Chris Cooley at TE will also contribute. The offense should be strong when all the players get on the same page as Griffin III and vice versa.

Defensively the Redskins will be tough to say the least. With Ryan Kerrigan and Brian Orakpo up front, the line should be strong. London Fletcher is getting old, but is still strong at linebacker. Barry Cofield joins the team from the DL of the Giants and will help immediately. The secondary could be suspect, but with the addition of Brandon Meriweather, they should be better. With DeAngelo Hall’s speed and Cedric Griffin for depth, the defense should be a solid unit.

Odds makers have the team as +1200 to take the NFC East title, +4000 to take the NFC Championship title and +8000 to lift the Vince Lombardi trophy. Most odds makers are predicting a 7 to 8 win season, with the win total for over/under set at 7. The Redskins not only have a difficult division schedule with Dallas, New York and Philadelphia, but they have to play Atlanta, Baltimore and Pittsburgh as well.

One player can make a huge difference in a team, but Griffin III cannot make tackles, defend passes or stop the run and that is what will make the difference between the Redskins making it to the playoffs. Look for them to fall short of that goal this year, third place in their division, but no postseason.
