Braves vs Mets Free Pick August 12 2012

August 12, 2012

The National League East is a two-team race between the Washington Nationals and the Atlanta Braves. Tonight the second place Braves take on the New York Mets to try to cut into the 4 ½ game lead of the Nationals. The Braves can sweep the Mets tonight with a win and increase their winning streak against New York to 8 straight. This season the Braves overall record is 66-47 and they are 7-3 in their past 10 games.

The Mets, on the other hand, have lost three straight games and have seen their season record dip to 54-60. Their chances of a wildcard spot are next to impossible, as they are 8 games behind their nearest competitor for one of the two spots. Tonight New York sends Jonathon Niese to the mound against the Braves.

Niese has a record this season of 8-6 with a 3.82 ERA. On Tuesday, he lost to Miami after giving up eight hits and four runs. However, the southpaw has won three consecutive starts versus the Braves. His teammates have helped him in those three starts, as he has been given over 9 runs of support on average in those three wins over the Braves.

The Braves will counter Niese with Ben Sheets. Sheets returned this season after sitting out for two seasons recovering from major arm surgery. Thus far, he is 4-1 with a 1.41 ERA. In his five starts this year, Sheets had allowed one or fewer runs in four of them. He beat New York 6-1 earlier in the season scattering two hits and striking out five over six innings.

Currently the odd makers have the line with the Braves favored at -112 and the Mets +102. The total is sitting at 7.5. Take the Braves to win tonight and sweep the Mets. The total will make winners of the OVER bettors.
