Major League baseball is heading into its stretch run with less than two months left of the regular season. Teams are fighting for division titles and two wildcard spots in each league. Today the Los Angeles Dodgers will take on the Chicago Cubs at Chavez Ravine for the third game of their current series. The Dodgers have won the first two games of the series. Currently Los Angeles is only a half game behind the San Francisco Giants for first place in the National League West.
Los Angeles’ record for the season is 58-50 after two straight wins over the Cubs and five out of the past ten. The Dodgers have been trying to add players to their roster to help the team in its playoff chase and one of those they added, veteran Joe Blanton, will start on the mound today. Blanton has a season record of 8-9 with a 4.59 ERA. He has appeared in very important series in his career and brings a great deal of experience to the club that will help both on the field and off.
Chicago is currently 43-62 this season, losers of two straight and are 4-6 over their last ten games. The Cubs are 22 games out of the lead in the National League Central in fifth place. The team is now looking to the future and trying to find player combinations that work and produce wins. Starting on the mound today for the Cubs will be right hander Justin Germano. Germano is 1-1 on the season with a 3.38 ERA. He pitched well in his last start by giving up only four hits over five innings of pitching to earn the win.
German will have to face a red hot Matt Kemp. The outfielder is batting .483 over his last seven games with two long balls and seven runs batted in. In Saturday’s victory over the Cubs, Kemp hit a two-run shot out of the park.
The oddsmakers currently have the Dodgers as the favorite -170 to the Cubs +150. The run total is resting at 8. Take the Dodgers to win their third straight and the Cubs to lose their fifth straight. The total will make winners out of those who choose the OVER.
